Goodwood Festival of Speed

Well it’s been a week since I got back from the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and I wish I was still back there. It was nice to get away from the stress of work for a few days and just relax having a nice cold beer and watching some amazing cars. As I mentioned in my previous post I went down with my good mate Stuart, we set of on Thursday at about 9:30am and had a nice steady drive down getting to Goodwood at about 4:30pm. The tent was erected quite quickly and the BBQ was soon lit and accompanied by a nice cold bottle of Becks.

The festival itself was fantastic, from the first moment waking up on Friday morning to the sound of V8’s and V10’s warming up in the distance, right to the very last beer and card game on Sunday evening. The event was very well organised and they seemed to have thought of everything, we were issued with a single ear radio upon purchasing the programme, which was tuned into the Goodwood radio for the weekend, giving you up to date news and commentary for the giant screens that were dotted around the festival that were broadcasting live footage from the hill-climb.

As for the cars there were some impressive machines doing runs of the hill and the custom built forest rally stage. The main car that caught my attention was the Ford GT40 in full Gulf livery, probably one of the most iconic colour schemes in the history of racing, gracing one of my all time favorite race cars. Also in Gulf colours was the Aston Martin DBR9 fresh from its GT1 win at Le Mans, it literally had come straight from the race unwashed and was dirtier than the rally cars.

The F1 guys were there doing burnouts and generally wowing the crowd, especially Jenson Button who pretty much sat on the start line with the back tires lit up, engulfing the crowd in smoke. It seemed to be the festival of anniversary’s with Land Rover, Porsche, Cosworth, Lola, F1, F5000, Gulf to name but a few of the anniversary’s that were been celebrated. This was great as it meant there was a vast spectrum of cars at the festival meaning there was plenty to see and do.

I don’t really want to turn this into a massive review so I think I will leave it at that for now, I might upload a few photos to a separate post, once I have time to sit down and go through them.

The Fast and the Wonderful!

Goodwood Festival

Well the 10th of July is finally approaching, and the excitement is barely containable. What’s going on I hear you ask! Well my good friend Stuart and myself are (after years of talking about) finally going to the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The event is held over three days (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) and is described by the festival website as,

The world’s biggest and most diverse celebration of the history of motor sport and car culture.

I have been looking forward to this event since we booked it in December of last year, we have booked in for camping for the full weekend, going down on Thursday and leaving on Monday, meaning we can enjoy the festival to the full. I have been keeping an eye on the weather forecast and it looks like we might be getting some light showers over the weekend, but hey if you are kitted out for the worst then I don’t think it matters all that much really.

Apparently it is the 60th anniversary celebrations of Land Rover as well to be held over the weekend at Goodwood, which should prove for some enjoying viewing.

Photography

I have come to the decision that I take far to many photographs. I have just finished installing my lovely new hard drives (one 750gb External & one 750gb Internal) which now give me 1.5 Terra-bites of storage for my images and work. This is great and the first images to grace the presence of my new drives were my photos from Scotland, all 15gig of them. It is at times like these that I wish there were more hours in the day, so far I have managed to sort through them and pick out the images I want to post-process. Which is great but once you add the 150 pics I took in Aimee’s garden last week the 200 pics from Cricket, and the fact that I really need to sit down and go through all of the images on my old drives, transfer, sort and post-process them, I have a bit of work to do. Hopefully I won’t take that many this weekend, doubt it though.

Just to finish off this post I wanted to say that I payed a visit to Hi-Spirits in Knaresborough this weekend, to purchase a few beers, they have a fantastic shop and the owner is a great guy to talk to. I got a good selection of Belgian beer all of which I have never sampled before. Think I might have to do some reviews on here when I finally sample them!

Right thats it for now, time to get sorted for my evenings climbing at Rock City!

Introduction

July 7th, 2008 by Gavin Appleby

Well to get things started a bit faster I have opted to use a theme template for the time being for the site. Simple reason for the moment being time constraints, I do have a few ideas bouncing about for the site layout and design but it is something that I will get back to later when I can spare a few minutes to get it sorted.

In the mean time how about an introduction, my name is Gavin and at the time of writing this post I am 26 years of age. I live in a sleepy little market town in East Yorkshire called Driffield.

I currently work full time for a Graphic Design company called Creativ Partnership, where I have been an employee for just over three years now. My role within the company is to head up the Multimedia and Web development division, basically meaning that my job is to develop and create websites and and form of multimedia application. I am also a very competent repro-spec artworker, and have been doing this within the company since my first day.

I have a great passion for my job, and anything design or web related, and feel lucky to do what I do.

As well as working for Creativ, I also work part-time for a small publishing company called Leonaur, who publish Military History and Science Fiction books.

My greatest passion in life however is photography, I started wielding a camera in Secondary school, developing my own negatives and processing my own prints in the darkroom. This lead me to college, where I discovered an interest and liking of the technical aspects of design and the internet. My time for photography dwindled as more of my time was spent in front of a computer learning how to program. recently my passion has been re-ignited with the purchase of a 400D before Christmas. I have created an account on deviantArt and have been trying to re-learn all I have forgotten over the years.

I thinks thats enough of an introduction for now, keep checking back for more posts.
